A Number That Shows Up Everywhere, Sourced Nowhere

Almost any list-style article ranking dog breeds by "bite force" will assign the Cane Corso a specific PSI (pounds per square inch) figure — often somewhere in the 700 range, sometimes higher. These numbers get repeated confidently across pet blogs, forum posts, and social media captions, frequently presented as settled scientific fact. They are, with rare exception, not sourced to any actual published study. Ask for the citation behind a specific Cane Corso PSI number and you'll typically find the trail goes cold at another blog post that also didn't cite anything — a chain of confident restatement with no original measurement at the bottom of it.

This article isn't trying to replace one unverified number with another. It's explaining why the number you've probably seen doesn't hold up, why bite force is a genuinely difficult thing to measure honestly, and why it's a less useful question for a prospective owner to focus on than it seems.

Where the Viral Numbers Actually Came From

Most of the bite-force figures that circulate for popular breeds trace back, directly or indirectly, to a single source: a National Geographic special from the mid-2000s that used a custom bite-force sleeve and transducer to measure a small number of dogs. That test measured a handful of breeds — commonly cited as including the Rottweiler, German Shepherd, and American Pit Bull Terrier — under controlled conditions with a limited sample size per breed. The Cane Corso was not one of the breeds included in that testing at all.

What appears to have happened since is that other breeds, including the Cane Corso, got assigned PSI numbers by comparison and extrapolation rather than direct measurement — sometimes scaled up from a tested breed based on head size or perceived similarity, sometimes simply invented outright and then repeated until it looked established. Once a number appears on enough sites, it starts to read as consensus, even though no one measured it. That's the actual origin story behind most of what you'll find: not a study of the Cane Corso specifically, but a game of telephone that started with a different breed entirely.

Why Bite Force Is Genuinely Hard to Measure Honestly

Even setting the sourcing problem aside, bite force is a much harder thing to measure meaningfully than a single PSI figure suggests. A few reasons why:

  • Dogs don't bite a lab sensor the way they bite in real life. A dog restrained and prompted to bite a padded transducer in a controlled setting is not exerting the same force, or necessarily trying to, as a dog in a genuinely defensive or predatory context. Measured "maximum" bite force in a lab setting is a proxy, not a ceiling.
  • PSI depends on contact area, not just force. Pounds per square inch is force divided by the surface area it's applied over. The same raw bite force distributed over a smaller contact area — a narrower tooth, a smaller bite surface — produces a higher PSI number, which means jaw shape and tooth geometry affect the figure independently of how "strong" the muscle actually is. Comparing PSI across breeds with different mouth structures without controlling for this is comparing two different things.
  • There is enormous individual variation. Muscle mass, age, motivation, and general health all affect what any single dog can produce on a given day. A breed-wide number implies a consistency that doesn't really exist between individual dogs, let alone across an entire breed population.
  • Sample sizes in the original research were small. Even the legitimate studies that do exist typically tested a handful of dogs per breed, not a statistically representative population. A number derived from a few individuals gets presented online as if it describes every dog of that breed.

What Can Be Said Honestly

The Cane Corso is a large, heavily muscled molosser breed with a broad skull and powerful jaw musculature relative to smaller breeds — that much is a straightforward observation about anatomy, not a claim requiring a specific number. Jaw strength scales generally with head size, muscle mass, and body size across the dog world, which is part of why large mastiff-type breeds are commonly assumed to have strong bites in the first place. That general, qualitative statement is defensible. A specific PSI figure attributed to the breed, without a cited, methodologically sound study behind it, is not — and this article isn't going to manufacture one just to fill the gap left by all the others.

If you come across a source that does cite a specific figure, the reasonable next step is the same one that applies to any health or breed claim: look for the actual study, the sample size, and the measurement method before treating the number as fact.

Why This Isn't Actually the Right Question

Even a perfectly sourced, methodologically sound bite-force number wouldn't tell a prospective owner much about what actually matters: whether a given dog is going to bite anyone in the first place. Bite force describes physical capacity, not behavior. A dog's temperament, training, socialization, and the way it's managed by its owner determine whether that physical capacity is ever relevant in a negative way — the same way a person's grip strength says nothing about whether they're going to get in a fight.

This is a genuine distinction, not a deflection. A well-bred, well-socialized, well-trained Cane Corso living with an owner who understands the breed's guardian instincts is a very different risk profile than a poorly socialized dog of any breed, regardless of what either one could theoretically do in a worst-case scenario. Focusing on a viral PSI number distracts from the questions that actually predict outcomes: How was this puppy bred and raised? Is the owner committed to the socialization and training a guardian breed requires? Is the dog being managed appropriately around unfamiliar people and situations?

What Actually Reduces Risk With Any Powerful Breed

For a breed capable of causing real harm if it ever did bite, the responsible focus is prevention through temperament and management, not reassurance through a number. That means: early and continued socialization through the fear periods of adolescence, foundational obedience and impulse control work, consistent management around situations that could provoke a defensive response, and — for families with children or frequent visitors — supervision that doesn't rely on a dog's good judgment alone. A breeding program's job is to produce dogs with sound, stable temperaments to begin with; an owner's job is to raise and manage that dog in a way that keeps sound temperament translating into safe behavior for its entire life.

None of this is specific to the Cane Corso. It's the same responsibility that comes with any large, physically capable breed — Rottweilers, Mastiffs, German Shepherds, and every other dog whose size means a bad outcome, if one ever happened, would be more serious than it would be with a small dog. The size and strength are real. What determines whether they ever matter is everything else.

The Bottom Line

The specific PSI number attached to the Cane Corso online almost never traces back to an actual study of the breed — it traces back to a small set of tests on different breeds, extrapolated and repeated until it looked like established fact. The honest version of the answer is qualitative: this is a large, strong, heavily muscled breed, and no responsible source can currently hand you a rigorously measured number more precise than that. More importantly, that number was never the question that actually predicts whether a dog is safe to live with. Temperament, breeding, socialization, and ongoing management do that work — and they're the questions worth asking a breeder, and asking yourself, instead.
